The Wigwam Frame Method

The wigwam frame for supporting runner beans is best for small gardens or vegetable plots. It is easy to construct but does have some disadvantages.

  1. Due to the lack of free flowing air in the centre there may be a chance during long damp periods of fungal growth.
  2. Its harder to spot and pick all the beans in the centre and not picking these beans will stop the plant from reproducing and therefore you will have a shorter picking period.

The Wigwam Construction

wigwam

The wigwam can be constructed individually or in series as in the above diagram. If you are building a single one in an exposed area then you could use a sturdy central post to give the structure more strength.

Hopefully you would have prepared some soil and around that soil you should mark out a 3 foot diameter circle. Firmly push 8 - 10 of your 8 foot bamboo canes or sturdy poles around the circumference and attach at the top with decent string leaving an overlap of about 10 inches.

If building in series then leave about 18 inches between frames and using canes join the wigwams at the intersections and tie in.

Your wigwams are now ready for your seeds or young plants.
