If you are worried about the risk of frost you can cover with a cloche or agra-fleece. Leave this on until the plants are established and the risk of frost is gone.
You may also like to plant a second crop in early june, this will extend the harvest of young tender beans.
Alternatively you can plant in trays or individual pots around mid April. Place in a green house or window sill until ready to plant outside. Preferable the plant will have 2 full leaves and the risk of frost has gone. Be careful not to overheat the plants this way.
If you don't have much room you could always try a mini greenhouse.
Mix any compost you use with some soil as a compost too rich may rot the seed.
This time plant only 1 to a cane but you can still cover using a small poly tunnel or even plastic bottles cut in half and placed over each individual plant. If you use plastic bottles make sure there is some ventilation.
When the plant reaches the top of the cane nip out the top bud. This will have the effect of stopping the plant from growing taller and it will concentrate its energy on flowers and fruit. |
