Soil Testing

Soil testing is an important job for every gardener because it can determine the eventual health of the plants.

The soil carries nutrients that can only be accessed by the plant when the soil is in the correct ph range.

It also affects the plants ability to utilize any pesticide, herbicide or fungicide that you may use.

If the soil is too acid (below 5.5) then these solutions become useless to the plant and are held in the soil eventually draining away to pollute streams, lakes and ground water.

The most common substance used to increase the ph level (make the soil less acidic) is Lime and it comes in various forms like granules or pellets.

You can get your garden lime here.

To decrease the ph level (make the soil more acidic) then aluminum sulphate and sulphur are used.
