More About Me

I was born in the late 40's into a market gardening family. My mother was a home maker and my father a strict bare knuckle boxing champion. There was always things to do in the fields and green houses when my brothers and sisters an I had finished school.

My parents used to then sell all the produce door to door from a large wheel barrow. As business and reputation for fresh quality fruit and vegetables grew the family moved to a larger piece of land on the out skirts of town.

This was in the late 60's and by now we had bought a lorry and were supplying all the local fruit and veg shops in town. Remember those days when every neighborhood had its own greengrocer and butcher etc.

A few years later I decided to buy my own piece of land even further out of town. My wife and I built our own house on the land, had a baby girl and I was sending my produce to the large Bristol fruit market.

Any way as supermarkets took over from the the small shops and bought from the the very large producers and from overseas vegetables were no longer seasonal or easy to sell for a fair price.

As with a lot of small to medium size producers the uprising of the supermarkets eventually put us out of business and the whole family branched out into other types of business.

I am now a garden designer/landscaper in a historic city in Somerset. With the increasing worry of global warming and food air miles and the popularity of people growing their own vegetables I thought I would give the benefit of experience to those that were interested.

Runner beans were not the only vegetable I grew and there will be new web sites on other vegetables so to keep informed why not sign up to the news letter on the home page.
